The Energy of Motion

In the last edition of Fueling Your Fire (Inertia to Evolution) we knocked on the door of your high school physics memory vault to explore the ideas of "inertia" and "momentum" and how they relate to embracing positive change-in your habits, in your vision, and in your business.

We're going to tap on that memory vault once again to explore how the oscillation between "potential energy" and "kinetic energy" is essential in building the capacity to leverage your health as a valuable personal and professional asset.

The Law of the Conservation of Energy

The Law of the Conservation of Energy states that, while "energy may take on various forms, the total energy of a system cannot be created or destroyed."

There it is: one of the elemental laws of our physical world confirming what you already know--there is only so much of you to go around.

So, if the sum total of "you" is a fixed resource, the question becomes not, "how do I dig deeper to find more of 'me' to give," but, rather, "how do I find the most powerful and sustainable ways to leverage the 'me' I have?"

A piece of the answer lies in the dynamic tension that exists in the continuous interplay between two forms of energy-your potential energy and your kinetic energy.

The Energy of Position vs. The Energy of Motion

potential energy
Function: noun
: the energy that a piece of matter has because of its position or nature or because of the arrangement of parts

In this context, this is the energy inherent within each of us and our access to it is increased and diminished based on the habits we choose which either honor or dishonor our physical, mental, emotional and spiritual health.

kinetic energy
Function: noun
: energy associated with motion

This is the energy of action and has an impact that is directly proportional to the level of potential energy present in a system.

Three Powerful Questions

Take a minute and flash to the vision you originally held for you business and its role in your life. Did you imagine yourself to be energized, creative and engaged in both your business and your life? Does your current reality match that vision?

If the answer is no, and you find yourself frustrated by the incongruence between your original vision and your current reality, ask yourself:

"What would have to change for me to feel completely alive?"

Hold the image of the first thing that comes to you, and then ask:

"Am I motivated to make that change?"

Then, for the real change junkies, follow it up with the action-provoking question:

"What is the most powerful action I can take TODAY
to support that?"

Remember, inertia doesn't just refer to lack of motion, it also refers to motion without change. And, as you build your ability to oscillate between increasing your potential-promoting habits and putting that potential to use through precise and intentional action, you create more sustainable ways to leverage the amount of 'you' you have.
