Building Blocks

How many items are on your task list right now? Go ahead—take a gander at the tasks listed in your PDA, the tablet on your desk, or the mental list tallied in you head. Are there more than you accomplish today? Do any of them involve your tending to your most important asset...you?

In 2004, the Families and Work Institute conducted a study on how we work today. The study points out that the way we prioritize our lives on and off the job is directly related to our feelings of being overworked. In this study, 26% of respondents claimed to feel overworked often or very often in the last month. Not surprisingly, those who reported feeling overworked were more likely to claim their health was poorer and were more likely to neglect caring for themselves.

Sound familiar?

Are you ready for the clincher? You work for yourself. That means that if you are in poor health or are less productive because of your health, you and your business pay—there is no big “corporate black-hole” for you to hide in.

Enough of the bad news. Are you ready for the good news? Health does not have to be a mysterious and elusive pursuit; a luxury attained only by those with time on their hands. The building blocks for physical and mental health are not only within your reach, but they are essential for your continued high performance. The next five editions of Fueling Your Fire are going to show you one step at a time how you can improve you health and bring new energy to both your business and your life.
